Malek (host)Good morning! Today on Health Corner, Dr Hela Gharbi answers your questions. Doctor, why is smoking so harmful?
👩‍⚕️
Dr GharbiCigarette smoke contains thousands of chemicals. They damage the lungs and the heart. A heavy smoker may get lung cancer, and he might lose his teeth too. Passive smoking is also dangerous: a child who lives with a smoker may have asthma.
🎙️
Malek (host)So why don’t smokers simply give up?
👩‍⚕️
Dr GharbiBecause they are addicted to nicotine. It might take several tries, but it is possible. My own father stopped at sixty!
👧
Ons, 15 (caller)Hello! My uncle smokes in the car with his children. The whole family disapproves of it, but he doesn’t listen. What can we do?
👩‍⚕️
Dr GharbiTalk to him kindly and show him the facts. And remember that smoking is prohibited in many public places, like schools and hospitals.
🎙️
Malek (host)Last question: is smoking the only danger to our health?
👩‍⚕️
Dr GharbiNo! When farmers use too many pesticides, or when factories dump waste into rivers, our food and water may become contaminated. So wash fruit well: it could save you a bad stomachache!

Dear Uncle Hedi,

I’m writing to you because I love you and I’m worried about your health. You smoke a packet of cigarettes a day. Smoking may damage your lungs and your heart, and you might have breathing problems when you climb the stairs. Your children breathe your smoke in the car too, so they could get asthma. I know you are addicted and that it is hard to give up, but many people do it. You may feel nervous for a few weeks, but you will feel better after that. Why not start with a walk every evening instead of a cigarette?

With love,
Amine
